Written in 1948 and warning of things to come, Orwelle's dystopian novel is set in a totalitarian future, where history is rewritten and independent thought is outlawed, so that when Winston Smith dares to write a diary and fall in love, he falls foul of the Thought Police. In addition to objections about its sexual content, the book has been banned repeatedly for its political stance.
